PSY
박재상- Name
- Park Jae-sang
- Born
- 31 December 1977
Took his stage name from "psycho" and has written his own comic, self-mocking songs since 2001.
Solo artist · P Nation · since 2001
He debuted in 2001 as a deliberately odd novelty singer and later made the first YouTube video to pass a billion views. In summer he still drenches stadium crowds at his Summer Swag shows.
Park Jae-sang grew up in Seoul, went to Boston to study business and ended up at Berklee, where he hardly showed up for class. Back home he released Psy from the Psycho World! in January 2001 and took his stage name from the title. The press filed him under bizarre singers, and "Bird" made that image stick. Hits like "Champion" followed in 2002, along with a long break for military service that he served twice.
In 2010 he signed with YG Entertainment. Two years later the video for "Gangnam Style" spread far beyond Korea. In December 2012 it became the first video on YouTube to reach a billion views. "Gentleman" came next, with more English in the lyrics, and he premiered it at a stadium concert in Seoul with a live stream on YouTube.
His songs are party tracks built around a punchline, and he is usually the punchline himself. "Daddy" brought in CL, "Hangover" Snoop Dogg. "New Face" in 2017 kept to the same formula. In summer he plays Summer Swag, stadium shows where the crowd ends up soaked to the skin.
After eight years he left YG in 2018 and started his own label, P Nation, which signed HyunA, Crush and Hwasa among others. His most recent album is Psy 9th (2022), led by "That That" with Suga of BTS. Since then the stage has come first. Summer Swag 2026 opened in Uijeongbu in June in front of 33,000 people, the start of a run of shows in nine cities across Korea.
