Have you eaten?

Korean BBQ, fried chicken, soju bars and Korean supermarkets in the Netherlands and Belgium, plus what to order once you sit down.

밥 먹었어?

bap meogeosseo?

In Korea this is how friends say hello. In K-dramas it is how people say I care about you. Characters make up over tteokbokki, fall in love over ramyeon and say goodbye over one last bottle of soju. So when the episode ends and you are hungry, here is where to taste it close to home: 30 places in 13 cities, each one checked on its own website.

What to order

  • Tteokbokki떡볶이

Chewy rice cakes in a sweet and spicy gochujang sauce. The after-school snack from every street stall scene.

  • Kimbap김밥

Rice and fillings rolled in seaweed and sliced. Picnic food, road-trip food, any-time food.

  • Ramyeon라면

Instant noodles, often eaten straight from the pot lid. Late at night they are never just noodles.

  • Chimaek치맥

Fried chicken (chikin) with beer (maekju). A first-snow ritual since My Love from the Star.

  • Samgyeopsal삼겹살

Thick pork belly grilled at your table, wrapped in lettuce with garlic and ssamjang.

  • Bibimbap비빔밥

Rice topped with vegetables, egg and gochujang. Mix it all before the first bite.

  • Bingsu빙수

Shaved ice with milk, fruit or sweet red beans. Made for sharing on a hot day.

  • Soju소주

The green bottle on every drama table. Pour for the others, never for yourself. Adults only.

Before you start

  1. Wait for the eldest

At a shared table the oldest person picks up their spoon first.

  2. Pour for the others

Fill the glasses around you, never your own. Hold the bottle with two hands for someone older.

  3. Share everything

Side dishes (banchan) are for the whole table, and they are usually refilled for free.
