AB6IX grew out of Produce 101 Season 2. Lee Dae-hwi and Park Woo-jin made it into Wanna One, while their Brand New Music labelmates Kim Dong-hyun and Lim Young-min debuted as the duo MXM. After Wanna One's contract ended, Brand New Music put the four together with Jeon Woong. They debuted on 22 May 2019 with B:Complete. The name means Absolute Six: five members, with the fans as the sixth.
"Breathe" won them a trophy on Show Champion two weeks after debut. The first studio album, 6ixense, came out that October with "Blind for Love", and a world tour opened in Seoul in November. The pandemic cancelled its European and American dates. In June 2020 Lim Young-min left the group, and AB6IX went on as four with "The Answer" from Vivid later that month.
Much of the music comes from inside the group. Lee Dae-hwi had already written for MXM and IZ*ONE before AB6IX, and he worked on "Breathe" and many tracks after it. He is not the only writer. Jeon Woong, the leader and eldest, is known at the agency as a songwriter and composer too. The group kept up a steady pace, with ten EPs from B:Complete to Upside Down, the one with "Stupid".
In March 2026 AB6IX released SEVEN : CRIMSON HORIZON, their first full-length album in about five years. Two sold-out anniversary nights in Seoul followed in May, and the next day the group contract with Brand New Music ended. In letters to fans, Kim Dong-hyun wrote that they would not disappear. Jeon Woong stayed with the agency, Park Woo-jin moved to Para Music and Lee Dae-hwi to Off the Record. The group itself is on a break, with no return date announced.
