Weki Meki started as Fantagio's trainee team, the i-Teen Girls, and two of them were famous before the group existed. Choi Yoojung and Kim Doyeon had made I.O.I on Produce 101, where Elly and Sei had also competed. In July 2017 Fantagio gave the eight a name with a story attached: eight girls, eight keys, and one more key that opens a new world once they are together.
They debuted on 8 August 2017 at Jangchung Arena with WEME and "I Don't Like Your Girlfriend", one day after Wanna One, the next Produce 101 group. The follow-up EP Lucky, with "La La La", came the next February.
Fantagio pitched them as a "teen crush" act, a younger spin on the girl-crush idea, and the singles leaned into it, from "Crush" in 2018 to "Picky Picky", which they called an upgraded version of the concept at the 2019 showcase. Lucky also slipped in a nostalgic touch, a remake of "Butterfly" from the film Take Off. At that same 2019 showcase the members said out loud that they still wanted a first music show win.
After I Am Me. in November 2021 the group went quiet, and the members worked on their own: Yoojung went solo with "Sunflower", Doyeon acted in Jirisan, and Elly tried Queendom Puzzle. In June 2024 Fantagio announced the end, with a last single, "CoinciDestiny", for the fans. Group activities stopped on 8 August 2024, exactly seven years after the debut, and Elly, Sei, Lua, Rina and Lucy left the agency.
