Before there was The Rose, there was Windfall: Dojoon, Hajoon and the bassist busking together. Dojoon brought in Woosung, a singer and guitarist, in late 2015. The four took the name The Rose, signed with J&Star Company and debuted on 3 August 2017 with "Sorry". Two EPs followed in 2018, Void and Dawn. Then things stalled. In 2020 the band went to court over its contract, and three of the four members enlisted for military service.
The return came in August 2022. The band partnered with Transparent Arts, the label founded by Far East Movement, released music through its own label Windfall and announced the HEAL Together world tour. The first album, HEAL, came out that autumn. DUAL followed in September 2023 and gave them a first entry on the Billboard 200. In April 2024 they became the first Korean band to play Coachella.
The Rose write and produce their own songs, often with a big chorus meant for a crowd. "Back to Me" from DUAL is a song to shout along to, while "Blue Moon" from 2026 is a quiet thank-you to the fans. The fans are the Black Roses, and the band named a 2020 single after them. Woosung also has a solo career, and the documentary The Rose: Come Back To Me told the band's story at the Tribeca Festival in 2025.
On 10 April 2026 The Rose announced a hiatus. The statement said it was a pause, not a disbandment, and that the band wanted to close this chapter properly with new music and one more tour. "Blue Moon" came out three days later. The ROSETOPIA tour started in June and took them to New York, Sao Paulo and Manila, with Singapore still to come at the end of October. After that, the four members step back to work on their own.
