Lee Ha-yi auditioned for the first season of SBS's K-pop Star and finished as runner-up. YG Entertainment signed her, and in October 2012 she debuted under her own name with "1, 2, 3, 4". A month later came "Scarecrow", a follow-up written by Park Jin-young. A studio album, First Love, arrived the next spring.
The song that still defines her came in 2016. "Breathe", from Seoulite, was written by Jonghyun of SHINee as a song of comfort, and it went to the top of every chart. After his death she said she was not sure she could sing it live again, but that she hoped it would keep helping people. In 2019 "No One", her duet with B.I, topped the charts as well.
When her YG contract ended in December 2019, she did not renew. Seven months later she joined AOMG, the hip hop and R&B label Jay Park founded, and came back the next day with "Holo". Speaking after the move, she defended YG, saying the company had backed her well. Under AOMG she made 4 Only, led by "Only". When that contract ended in March 2024, she moved on to Duover, the company run by Gray and Code Kunst.
Her Duover contract ended in March 2026. Within weeks she and the rapper Dok2 had launched their own hip hop and R&B label, 808 HI RECORDINGS. Its first release was a slow duet of the two, "You & Me", out on 28 March. For the first time in her career she now puts out music on a label she co-owns.
