Their story

Leaving, then coming back

Lee Sun-mi became a JYP trainee at 14 and debuted with Wonder Girls in 2007. In 2010 she stepped away from the group to study. Her return in August 2013 was a solo one: she sang "24 Hours" on M Countdown, and the song climbed to second place on the Gaon chart. The EP Full Moon followed half a year later.

Gashina

In 2015 she went back to Wonder Girls, this time holding a bass guitar for their band comeback, and she helped write songs on Reboot. When the group ended in 2017 she moved to MakeUs, the company now called ABYSS. That August "Gashina" went to No. 1 in Korea and became the best-selling K-pop song in America for a week. "Heroine" was its prequel, and "Siren" carried her first world tour.

Sunmi-pop

Around 2018 fans and critics started calling her style Sunmi-pop: K-pop built on disco, retro sounds and city-pop. Summer turned into her season, with "Pporappippam" and "Heart Burn" both arriving in late June. In August 2020 she even recorded "When We Disco" with her old boss, J.Y. Park. She has taken over more of the writing over time, composing "Balloon in Love" on her own.

Where she is now

In November 2025 she released HEART MAID, her first full-length album, and had a hand in the writing and composing of all of its songs. Eight months later came "Forever July", where she is listed as the only lyricist. When its video came out on 15 July 2026, Korean headlines had a name ready for her: summer queen.
