Their story

Out of the quartet

Hwasa spent almost five years as the youngest member of MAMAMOO before RBW gave her a single of her own. "Twit", released in February 2019, mixed trap beats with a tropical lilt, and she helped write and compose it. She said the lyrics came from her own love life. The song topped the Korean charts, and her fans later took their name from it.

Maria and after

Her first mini album, María, came the next summer, and its title track became the most-watched video of her career. In 2023 she left RBW for Psy's P Nation while staying in MAMAMOO, and opened that chapter with "I Love My Body". By March 2024 her fans had an official home, Twits, and a year later she took her first solo tour to North America.

Stages that tell a story

Hwasa writes much of her own material, often with the composer Park Woo-sang. For years she was known for intense concepts, and she has said she grew tired of that style. "Good Goodbye" showed what a single image can do. Its video starred actor Park Jung-min, and at the Blue Dragon Film Awards she sang it barefoot while he held her red shoes, as if the video had a final scene. The song had been out for five weeks; after that night it topped the Korean charts.

Where she is now

She followed the biggest hit of her career with something small on purpose. "So Cute", released in April 2026, is soft pop about finding warmth in little things, with lyrics she wrote together with Psy and a video in which she spends time with children. She said she had no sales or chart goals for it. In September she flew to Brazil to play Rock in Rio, in a year she had planned to share between solo work and MAMAMOO.
