Golden Child arrived in August 2017 as Woollim's answer to a simple question: what comes after Infinite? The agency billed them as Infinite's younger brother group, and the link was literal. Leader Daeyeol is the younger brother of Infinite's Sungyeol, who came to cheer at the debut showcase in Seoul. There were eleven members, and Jaeseok explained the name as a perfect person who appears only once in a hundred years. Their first title track, "DamDaDi", was bright and rock-tinged.
Jaeseok left within months, and the ten who stayed kept a busy schedule of EPs and single albums. The win came with the first studio album, Re-boot. Its title track "Wannabe" took first place on M Countdown in December 2019, and a month later they held their first solo concert. The repackage Without You followed in January 2020.
After the bright start of "DamDaDi" and "Genie", the sound slowly got heavier. "Ra Pam Pam" led the second studio album, Game Changer, and the last group single, Feel Me, went for post-grunge rock with distorted guitar. Its story follows friends who grew up together and lean on each other. Tag wrote, composed and arranged its B-side "Dear" himself.
Military service thinned the line-up first, with Daeyeol and Y enlisting in 2022 and 2023. Then came the contracts. In August 2024 Tag, Jibeom and Bomin left, and Woollim said Golden Child would carry on as seven. Before the year was out, Daeyeol, Y, Seungmin, Jaehyun and Donghyun had left the agency as well. Only Jangjun and Joochan stayed, and no group activity has followed.
