EXID drew attention before their debut as the girl group of producer Shinsadong Tiger. They debuted under Banana Culture in February 2012 with "Whoz That Girl". Two months later three of the six original members left. Solji and Hyelin joined, and the new line-up returned that summer with the EP Hippity Hop. Solji, LE, Hani, Hyelin and Jeonghwa have been EXID ever since.
Their breakout song started slowly. "Up & Down" came out in August 2014 and at first made little noise. Then a fancam of Hani performing it spread online. Months after its release the song climbed the charts and gave EXID their first music show wins. LE later said the members were "dumbstruck" when it went viral, and Solji has called EXID "the beginning of fancams". The follow-up "Ah Yeah" showed it was not a one-off.
Shinsadong Tiger and LE shaped much of the sound. "Up & Down" is built on a saxophone melody and a short hook, and LE co-wrote its lyrics. "Hot Pink" kept the playful side, and "L.I.E" led Street, their only Korean studio album. Eclipse came out with four members while Solji took a break, and all five returned together with "I Love You" in 2018. For their tenth anniversary they released the single album X, and this time the members worked more on production, concept and styling than before.
EXID never disbanded. After the EP We in 2019, Hani and Jeonghwa left Banana Culture and team activities paused. The five kept promoting in Japan for another year, and today each member works with a separate agency. They came together again in 2022 for X and a fan concert. A five-member concert in Taipei, EXID: EXtra ID, was announced for May 2026.
