Their story

Cosmic Girls from two agencies

WJSN started as a joint project of two companies: Starship Entertainment in Korea and Yuehua Entertainment in China. The name is short for 우주소녀 (Woo Ju So Nyeo), Korean for Cosmic Girls. Twelve members, nine Korean and three Chinese, debuted in February 2016 with the EP Would You Like? and "Mo Mo Mo". That June Yeonjung, who had come through Produce 101 and I.O.I, joined as the 13th member. By the end of the year they had collected rookie awards, among them Rising Star at the Asia Artist Awards.

A song for every New Year

One WJSN song comes back every winter. "As You Wish", released in November 2019, became a New Year's song in Korea and topped the main real-time charts on 1 January six years in a row. A year earlier, "Save Me, Save You" from WJ Please? had helped define their style. In 2022 they won Mnet's Queendom 2, against Kep1er, Loona, Brave Girls, Viviz and Hyolyn. Their cover of GFriend's "Navillera" from the show passed 4 million views on YouTube.

Space, units and own songs

Space runs through the group, from the name to the fandom name Ujung. The word means friendship, and it also abbreviates "space station". Over the years the title tracks moved from "Secret" and "Happy" to "Butterfly" on Neverland and "Unnatural". Two units showed other sides. WJSN Chocome released Hmph! in 2020, and WJSN The Black followed with My Attitude a year later. Leader Exy writes as well. She wrote "Aura" on Sequence, and later wrote and composed "Bloom hour".

Where they are now

WJSN have not disbanded, but most of the members now work solo, in music, drama and musicals. In 2023 eight of them renewed with Starship. Luda and Dawon left the agency but stayed in the group, and the contracts of the three Chinese members ended. For the 10th anniversary in February 2026, eight members released "Bloom hour" for their fans. The contracts of Seola and Eunseo with Starship ended in September 2026. No lineup change has been announced.
