Their story
One girl a month
LOONA were introduced one member at a time. The Korean name, 이달의 소녀, means "Girl of the Month", and that was the plan. Starting with Heejin in 2016, Blockberry Creative revealed a new girl roughly every month, each with her own single release. Along the way three units, LOONA 1/3, Odd Eye Circle and yyxy, released EPs of their own. The project ran for about 18 months, until Hyeju, then called Olivia Hye, became the twelfth member. The full group debuted in August 2018 with the EP [+ +] and "Hi High".
Fans before the debut
All that build-up meant LOONA had fans before the full group had a single song. Their first concert sold out in two minutes, and [+ +] entered Billboard's World Albums chart at No. 4. The first music show win took longer. It came in March 2020, with "So What" on M Countdown. Later that year [12:00] became their first entry on the Billboard 200. In 2021 "Star", the English version of "Voice", made it onto Billboard's Pop Airplay chart.
Twelve pieces of one story
LOONA tied their releases together in one shared fictional universe. The units and solo singles were pieces of that story, and that left room for very different sounds. Kim Lip's solo song "Eclipse" ended up on NASA's playlist for the 2017 solar eclipse. The unit yyxy brought in the Canadian musician Grimes for "love4eva". As twelve, they went from "Hi High" to "So What", "Why Not?" and "PTT (Paint the Town)". On Mnet's Queendom 2 they finished second.
Where they are now
LOONA no longer works as a twelve-member group. By June 2023 all twelve had left Blockberry Creative. Heejin, Haseul, Kim Lip, Jinsoul and Choerry now perform as ARTMS under Modhaus. Hyunjin, Yeojin, Vivi, Go Won and Hyeju debuted as Loossemble that September. Chuu and Yves went solo. Yves released the EP Soft Error in 2025, and Chuu followed with her first solo studio album, XO, My Cyberlove, in January 2026.
