Only look at me

Dong Young-bae was two years into BIGBANG when YG gave him a solo EP. Hot came out in May 2008 with "Only Look at Me" and "Prayer", both with Teddy Park. It was the best-selling album in Korea that month, and the Korean Music Awards named it the best R&B and soul album of the year. "Wedding Dress" followed in 2009, and in 2010 his first full album, Solar, paired him with G-Dragon on "I Need a Girl".

Eyes, Nose, Lips

"Ringa Linga" in 2013 showed off the dancer. Then came Rise, and its slow lead single "Eyes, Nose, Lips" topped the Korean charts and won Song of the Year at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in December 2014. Three years on, the video reached 100 million views. White Night (2017) was his last album before he enlisted in March 2018.

Soul with a dance step

His solo work stays close to R&B and soul, the field his first EP was honoured in, with a dance track now and then. After military service he moved to THEBLACKLABEL, a label affiliated with YG. The first result was "VIBE" with Jimin of BTS, which became his fastest video to 100 million views. The EP Down to Earth and its single "Seed" came three months later.

Where he is now

After the Light Year world tour and a fan meeting tour in 2025 came Quintessence, released on his birthday, 18 May 2026, with ten songs. The title track, "Live Fast Die Slow", is the fastest song he has ever put out. Around it he has been back on stage with BIGBANG, at Coachella in April and for their 20th anniversary.
