MBLAQ began as Rain's project. He trained the five members at J.Tune Camp, and they first stepped on stage at his own Legend of Rainism concert at Olympic Park in October 2009. The name, revealed on a vampire-themed teaser poster, stood for Music Boys Live in Absolute Quality. Seungho led a line-up with G.O, Lee Joon, Thunder and the youngest, Mir. Their single album Just BLAQ and its lead track "Oh Yeah" followed within days.
The first win came eight months later, when "Y" beat SS501 on M Countdown. Their only studio album, BLAQ Style, came out at the start of 2011, and in May they debuted in Japan. That summer came the EP Mona Lisa. By then MBLAQ was no longer simply the group Rain had introduced.
MBLAQ's singles were built for the stage, and "This Is War" in 2012 pushed the drama furthest. G.O brought an R&B background from his first group, Ty Keys, and wrote and produced his first solo song himself. Mir, the rapper and youngest, co-wrote lyrics on BLAQ Style. In Japan, "Your Luv" went to No. 1 on the Oricon daily chart on its release day, and "Mona Lisa" later got its own Japanese version.
Lee Joon and Thunder left in December 2014, after the Curtain Call concerts, where the members had promised to keep the name. Seungho, G.O and Mir returned as a trio with Mirror in June 2015, and that is still the last release. Mir enlisted the next year, and the three moved on to musicals, acting and, in Mir's case, a YouTube channel with his sister. MBLAQ never announced a disbandment. In October 2026 Seungho posted a photo with Mir for the 17th anniversary and promised one of G.O soon.
