PRISTIN was Pledis Entertainment's first girl group since After School, and most of the public met them before they had a name. Seven of the trainees, then called Pledis Girlz, competed on Produce 101 in 2016, and Nayoung and Kyulkyung made it into I.O.I. While those two were busy, the others released "We", a song four of them had written themselves. Ten members debuted as PRISTIN in March 2017, a portmanteau of prismatic and elastin.
"Wee Woo", co-composed by Sungyeon, opened Hi! Pristin, and every member had a hand in writing for the EP. Their first year went about as well as a debut year can. By the start of 2018 they had collected rookie awards from MAMA, the Asia Artist Awards and the Seoul Music Awards. The second EP, Schxxl Out, with "We Like", followed that August, while Kyla went on hiatus in October.
Pledis promoted them with the slogan "power pretty", and the debut songs were bright, crowded pop built for ten voices. What set them apart was how much the members wrote: Sungyeon based parts of "Wee Woo" on the personalities of the others, and Yuha wrote her own songs. In May 2018 five of them, Nayoung, Roa, Eunwoo, Rena and Kyulkyung, stepped out as PRISTIN V with "Get It", their only release as a unit.
No full-group album followed. On 24 May 2019 Pledis announced the disbandment, and the contracts of seven members ended the same day, while Kyulkyung, Yehana and Sungyeon stayed. Roa, Yuha, Eunwoo and Rena debuted again as HINAPIA that November. Nayoung and Xiyeon went into acting in Korea, and Kyulkyung into Chinese dramas. Pledis closed the group's social media accounts at the end of June 2019, and the fan cafe went quiet.
