LIGHTSUM was Cube's first new girl group in years, and it arrived with eight members in June 2021. The name adds up light and sum: small lights shining together. Three of them, Chowon, Nayoung and Yujeong, had already been seen on Produce 48, and Juhyeon came from The Unit. "Vanilla" was bright teen pop about the nerves of something new. Juhyeon led the group in those first months, before any of them had sung for a live crowd.
The first EP, Into the Light, gave them a harder edge with "Alive" and its dance break. Five months later Cube announced that Huiyeon and Jian would not continue and that LIGHTSUM would carry on as six. The next comeback took a long time. When Honey or Spice finally came out in October 2023, Sangah introduced the group as its leader and the members spoke openly about the anxious months in between.
Honey or Spice split the six into two units for the first time, one powerful and one bright. Juhyeon composed the B-side "Skyline" and Sangah wrote its words. "POSE!" in 2024 was Miami bass with a camera metaphor, and the members said they wanted to look less stiff in front of the lens. In January 2026 Sangah, Chowon and Juhyeon showed another side again, as a ballad unit covering BTOB's "Beautiful Pain".
Two years passed without a new song from all six. Then the Japanese platform ABEMA followed them in Re:Idol, a documentary about an offer to re-debut as a Japanese-style idol group. They picked member colours, learned new greetings and practised kawaii self-introductions. The mini album Re:idol came out in Japan in September 2026 with "Doushite", a song about unrequited love. Since October the members also host a weekly radio show on FM Osaka.
