The group began as an idea from J.Y. Park and Monte Lipman of Republic Records: an American girl group built in the K-pop system. The search ran as A2K on JYP's YouTube channel in the summer of 2023, with contestants from the US and Canada. The finale named six members, and the same day "Y.O.Universe" came out under the name VCHA, from the Korean word for "to shine upon".
The official debut followed in January 2024 with "Girls of the Year", and within weeks VCHA were opening for TWICE in stadiums in Las Vegas, Mexico City and São Paulo. The momentum did not hold. Kaylee went on hiatus that spring, and in December KG announced she was leaving. What followed was a long silence. When JYP finally spoke again, in August 2025, the four who remained had a new name: GIRLSET.
VCHA sounded like bright, polished teen pop. As GIRLSET the members took a harder line, starting with the confident "Commas" and the Missy Elliott remix of "Little Miss". "Tweak" leaned on vintage R&B with the hook "Don't think that I'm weak". Like "Little Miss" before it, it topped YouTube's worldwide trending chart, and it entered Billboard's Digital Song Sales chart. "CHAT", produced by The Stereotypes, went somewhere else again, with choreography rooted in hip-hop.
Lexi, Camila, Kendall and Savanna released "CHAT" in July 2026 and finally performed on Korean music shows, two and a half years after their debut. Fans got an official name in March, LOCKETS. A first full album has been mentioned, but no title or date has been given.
