Block B

블락비

Seven members led by rapper Zico; their debut video "Freeze!" was ruled too explicit for daytime TV. They went quiet after 2018, then shared one stage again in 2024.

Their story

A banned first video

Block B introduced themselves with trouble. The video for "Freeze!" came out in April 2011 and was quickly judged too explicit for Korean TV: the song was restricted to adult listeners. Two days later the seven members, led by the rapper Zico, played their first stage on Music Bank. The name was short for Blockbuster, and their first studio album, in 2012, was called exactly that.

Very Good, then better

The early years were not easy. A legal dispute with their first agency, Stardom, ended with a move to Seven Seasons in 2013. That autumn the EP Very Good went to No. 1 on the Gaon album chart, and the group played concerts in Europe and the US in the years that followed. "H.E.R" won Best Male Dance at the MelOn Music Awards. Then came "Toy", which swept the online charts.

Zico's raps, Park Kyung's song

Block B made loud, rap-heavy idol music with Zico at the writing desk, but the group could also slow down. "Yesterday", written and composed by Park Kyung, topped all eight Korean real-time charts on release day. Three of the members, B-Bomb, U-Kwon and P.O, also worked as the sub-unit BASTARZ. Their last seven-member release was the ballad "Don't Leave", on Re:MONTAGE.

Where they are now

In November 2018 Zico left Seven Seasons to go solo and later founded his own label, KOZ Entertainment; the other six renewed. Military service took the members away one by one, starting with Jaehyo. The group never announced a split. In September 2024 all seven stood on one stage again for the final episode of Zico's KBS show The Seasons. Since then each has gone his own way, from P.O's acting to Zico's solo work, and no group comeback has been announced.
